“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
— James 1:5
Every day, we make decisions.
Some are small—what to prioritize, how to respond to someone, or where to spend our time. Others can shape the direction of our lives—career choices, relationships, ministry, finances, and the opportunities we choose to pursue.
The challenge is not simply knowing what to do.
The challenge is knowing what is right according to God’s will.
That is why we need wisdom.
Wisdom Begins with God
The world offers many sources of advice.
We can listen to people, read books, search for answers, and learn from experience. These things can be valuable, but they should never replace our dependence on God.
True wisdom begins with recognizing that God knows more than we do.
Proverbs 9:10 tells us:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
When we place God at the center of our decisions, we begin to see life from a different perspective.
Instead of asking only, “What do I want?” we begin asking, “What does God want?”
Ask God for Wisdom
James 1:5 gives us a wonderful promise: when we lack wisdom, we can ask God.
We don’t have to pretend that we know everything.
We don’t have to figure everything out on our own.
We can pray.
We can seek God’s Word.
We can ask Him for direction.
Sometimes the answer may not come immediately, but prayer helps align our hearts with God’s will.
When we ask God for wisdom, we are acknowledging that His understanding is greater than ours.
Wisdom Means Knowing When to Wait
Not every opportunity is an opportunity we should take.
Sometimes we become so eager to move forward that we forget to ask whether God is leading us there.
Wisdom teaches us to slow down.
To pray before deciding.
To seek counsel.
To consider the consequences.
And sometimes, to wait.
Waiting can feel like doing nothing, but there are moments when waiting is actually an act of faith.
Wisdom knows that moving quickly is not always the same as moving wisely.
Choose Your Influences Carefully
The people around us can influence the way we think, speak, and make decisions.
That is why Scripture encourages us to surround ourselves with wise people.
Proverbs 13:20 says:
“Walk with the wise and become wise.”
The voices we listen to matter.
Choose people who encourage you to grow closer to God. Learn from people who demonstrate integrity, humility, patience, and godly character.
Good counsel does not simply tell us what we want to hear.
Sometimes, wise people challenge us to see what we may not want to see.
Wisdom Is More Than Knowledge
Knowing the right thing and doing the right thing are not always the same.
We can have knowledge without wisdom.
Wisdom is knowing how to apply what we know in a way that honors God.
It is choosing patience when anger feels easier.
It is choosing honesty when lying would be more convenient.
It is choosing forgiveness when holding onto bitterness feels justified.
It is choosing humility when pride wants recognition.
Wisdom is not just knowing God’s truth—it is living it.
Let God’s Word Guide Your Steps
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
We may not always see the entire road ahead.
God doesn’t necessarily reveal every detail of our future.
But He gives us enough light for the next step.
Sometimes that’s all we need.
We don’t need to know everything that will happen tomorrow.
We need to trust God enough to follow Him today.
When we allow His Word to guide our decisions, we can walk forward with confidence—even when the path is unfamiliar.
Walk Wisely Every Day
Walking with wisdom is a daily journey.
It means being intentional about our choices, our words, our relationships, our time, and our priorities.
Before making a decision, pause and pray.
Before responding, consider your words.
Before pursuing an opportunity, seek God’s direction.
Before following the crowd, ask whether the path honors Him.
And when you make a mistake, don’t be afraid to learn from it.
God can use every experience to shape us into wiser and more faithful people.
Reflection
Take a moment to ask yourself:
- Am I seeking God’s wisdom before making important decisions?
- Whose advice and influence am I allowing into my life?
- Is there an area where I need to slow down and wait on God?
- Am I applying God’s Word to the choices I make every day?
Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom to make decisions that honor You. Help me not to rely only on my own understanding, but to seek Your guidance in everything I do. Teach me to listen, to wait when necessary, and to recognize the people and influences that lead me closer to You. Let Your Word guide my thoughts, decisions, and actions. May my life reflect wisdom that comes from knowing and following You. Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Before making your next important decision, take a moment to stop, pray, and seek God’s wisdom.
Ask Him to guide your thoughts and give you clarity. Then take the next step with faith.
Seek God’s wisdom. Follow His Word. Walk faithfully.
